Wonderful staff who helped us with everything, good breakfast, amazing onsen (especially the outdoor one-bathing under Sakura trees and to the sound of the waves). Unique Japanese experience. Quiet place a bit outside of town, but regular shuttle there. Overall one of the best stays we had in Japan!
Hot-spring baths and massages can be enjoyed at Nakanoshima, located a 5-minute ferry ride from Kanko Sanbashi pier. Traditional Kaiseki dinners and rooms with views of Nachi Bay are featured.

The start of your journey begins with a lovely boat ride to the island where the hotel is situated. Staff was wonderful and warm and made guests feel welcome. The room and facilities were a bit outdated, but everything was spotless. Our room had beautiful views overlooking the bay. We had the most amazing massage chair in our room (Japanese style family room). The onsen facilities are immaculate with awe inspiring views.
The free popsicles and sake were nice touches. You can even rent fishing poles. Great hotel in a quaint fishing village close to the Kumano Kodo.
Conveniently located just a 1-minute walk from Kiikatsuura Train Station, Wakatake offers cozy Japanese-style accommodations featuring tatami (woven-straw) flooring and traditional futon bedding.

We liked the setting, the view from our room of the ocean and the closeness to the Natchi waterfall, and the Kumano Kodo trail!

Katsuura is very scenic with beautiful bays, and a backdrop of mountains and small towns. Kii Katsuura is renowed for tuna fishing and so the freshest tuna sushimi can be found everywhere. Accommodation places are not far from the train station and local bus transport is available. While there are beaches as well as opportunity for recreational walking, we didn't have time to explore these options.

Only had half a day & 1 night but wish I had more. Convenient JR station with excellent help and support from train staff & information centre. With the fish market there it was a hotspot for locals enjoying fresh fish and sushi. Few other restaurants to choose from for more variety. Great spot for sightseeing if ocean views are your thing. The next suburb approx 5-10min away even has a shopping complex including cinema and western fast food (if you’re so inclined). Seemed like a good base to explore southern Wakayama and it’s not full of western tourists (yes I am aware of the irony leaving this review being a western tourist 😂)

Near the Kumano national park, a seaside town known for tuna and onsens.
Local fish market near the harbour has fresh tuna sushi/sashimi. The big cave onsen inside hotel Urashima is a must visit, doesn't have to stay overnight, can visit via a day pass.
Kumano Nachi Taisha shrine (part of Kumano Kodo hiking route) and waterfall is nearby. There are buses between Katsuura and Nachi. The visit takes around half a day.

Amazing tuna sushi from fish caught the same day!!
Nachi no Ogi Matsuri (Nachi Fire Festival) was really impressive and the mountain surrounding it is beautiful with giant trees and Japan's largest waterfall!
Really friendly people and easy to get around too!
The lady in the tourist information booth was really nice and they even have special local anime mascot goods available there so check that out too!
Overall this little fishing town is fun to explore with lots of local charm, great cultural experiences, and beautiful nature to admire. I definitely recommend visiting for a festival and checking out the daily tuna auctions in the morning. Eat maguro everything and be happy!

Kii-Katsuura is an attractive fishing village, with many interesting and relatively inexpensive restaurants specializing in tuna dishes, mostly raw. It is the gateway to a number of the most important Kumano Kodo sights such as the Nachi Taisha grand shrine, and the Nach no Taki waterfall, the highest in Japan.

A charismatic little fishing port, with a clean and interesting functioning fishing harbour. The morning's fish market auction is worth seeing.
Plenty of good Tuna-specialist restaurants.
An ideal place to spend the night after finishing the Kumano Kodo, and then catch a train the next day.
Located about 15-20 min walk from kii-katsurra station. Very good views over the sea. Hotel facilities good and we hadn’t booked dinner but when we asked the staff they were very friendly and happy to help us order from the restaurant separately which was really nice of them as we had just finished the Kumano kodo hike and were not in the mood to go back out and walk the 20 mins back into the town to find somewhere to eat! Overall clean and comfortable. They offered a free shuttle back to the station also.
The onsen was really nice. I also enjoyed the long escalator. I also recommend watching the sunrise at the top of the mountain. It is a very beautiful view of the ocean and the town with the sunrise. The food was also delicious and I was glad they had a variety. The room is very spacious and had great view of the town. Another thing I liked was the cute turtle boat that ferries you to and from the hotel.
I was running late at check-out and was given 30 extra minutes, which was very generous of the host. A free bicycle was also available, which was very convenient. The house has plenty of space and a full, well-equipped kitchen. The neighborhood is very quiet, about 2km away from Kii-Katsuura Station. The taxi ride from Kii-Katsuura Station to the house on the day of my arrival was ¥1,120.
Great views of the beach and surfers. 2 minutes from kii-temma station.
The bedrooms are smallish, but have everything you need. And the beds are super comfy with very nice duvets & plump pillows. The bedroom window that is the width of the room and shows off the stretch of coast, is lovely……along with a tiny balcony.
The breakfast is also great quality- tuna sashimi for breaky!!
I only have positive things to say about the staff at this hotel. A gentleman greeted me so politely. He knew exactly who I was. I was frustrated due to being lost by following Google Map directions. This kind man was so understanding. He excelled at customer service.....a big hug to that gentleman.
The space was great, good view, and there's a promenade for viewing with a footbath at the top. Open air baths are great. Free drinks and snacks during certain happy hours. Food service was filling. Loved the print of the hotel yukatas featuring yatagarasu, the three legged crow myth of the area.
I loved the open air bath. The room was spacious with comfortable beds and with a beautiful view towards the sea. The hotel is a bit remote, so all the surrounding area is very calm and quiet. And the breakfast was delicious, the best we've head in Japan. ❤️
It's definitely the most beautyful onsen I've seen so far. Very nice location, hotel and staff.
Massage seat in the room was great!
My girlfriend could join the onsen even though she was tattoed.
Traditonal large Japanese style resort hotel. inclusive buffet dinner+breakfast of western+Japanese food. Numerous on site Onsens; most notibly 2 that are set in caves opening up to the ocean.
The onsens were beautiful and there were many to try, there were lots of things to check out in the hotel and the room was nice. The buffet dinner was also delicious, though a little pricey.
Short boat trip to the hotel away from the busy world. Very nice hot spring next by the sea. Good view and very relaxing. Walk up to the peak with the kids after breakfast is enjoyable.
The view from the balcony, amazing! They also offer a free shuttle to go to the hotel in the afternoon and go to the city in the morning. The room was very nice, Japanese style.
Good location with sea view. Walking distance to Kii Temma train station. Very peaceful surrounding and town. Room was spacious and clean. Very friendly and helpful hotel staff.
Our room was traditional Japanese, large, quiet, and relaxing with a nice view of the Pacific.
Hotel Urashima is a convenient location from which one can visit Nachisan.
Best place you can rent to see the area, specially if you prefer apartments to hotels. The staff is very professional and kind, you cannot go wrong renting this place.
