There is a lot to do around Ichinoseki, the scenery is beautiful. Even though the trains go through this area I would recommend having a car. Geibikei gorge was beautiful and the boat ride was good for kids as they get to feed the fish the whole way along.

There are very few places for breakfast as is usual in Japan. The cafe just outside the station isn't bad but consider the hotel breakfast if you don't like food from the convenience shop.
I also highly recommend renting a car as it makes moving around much easier .
