Room is quite spacious, enough space to walk around and lay out our luggage. Ample electric sockets, and good WiFi. Furniture a bit dated but kept clean. We got a room on its top floor with a great view. Wasn't that many dishes for it buffet breakfast, possibly due to the lack of guests, but still it's good enough. Hotel staff are extremely courteous, be it at the reception, or inside the restaurant. There's a Mitsukoshi mall next to the hotel, with a supermarket and drug store. It's about 10 min's leisurely walk from Yamagata Station, and in between you'll pass by some restaurants and convenience stores. Not really that close to the station, but the room rate is generally cheaper that some others around.

Close to the station, very nice Japanese breakfast.
The Yamagata Ski area (Zao Onsen) is fantastic. It wasnt crowded, lessons for kids and adults were AUD$55 for 4 hours, lifts were @4$ per lift. Gear hire was AUD$65 for 2 days PP. In Australia lift passes are $250 per day alone. The hotel Sailor Hutte was literally at the base of the ski lifts. Food was cheap ($10-14 per meal) booze was cheap ($3.50 for a beer). The guys at the Hotel Sailor Hutte were great, make an effort to chat with them via your translator app. Its worth it. One more thing, I would recommend buying Shinkansen tickets directly from JR East rail online. Heaps cheaper than buying a seven day pass unless you are planning to spend 7 days on the train. FYI there are 3 Shinkansen companies East, Central and West. They have there own websites a bit clunky in English but it works. Good luck.

Yamagata is a beautiful mountainous prefecture.
Yamagata is a beautiful mountainous prefecture. There are many places to visit and things to do. We rented a car and I believe this is a must if you want to sight see and time is an issue for you. By car from Yamagata train station, Zao Onsen is about 40-50 minutes away, Ginzan Onsen an hour, Yamadera about 20-30 mins. If you are into photography, there are many great landscape photos you can take here.

Not very famous place for travelingas not much to see in the city.
If you could have a car or rent one, could go more places.
Basically in Yamagata prefecture, public transportation doesn't cover much as it is not a prefecture mainly for sightseeing though there are several nice places to go.

Yamagata is ideal as a base to get to Zao Onsen and Ginzan Onsen. There are bus and train connections to these two incredibly beautiful places. We also took the train through beautiful mountainous countryside to the coast to Matsushima, one of the three most beautiful places in Japan. Climbing 1100 steps at Yamadera was exhausting but so worth it when you saw the view over the valley. This area seems to be undiscovered by western tourists yet.
amenities were excellent !The route inn is my hotel of choice when staying in Japan. I loved the public bath and the Japanese breakfast was exceptional. The staff in the restaurant breakfast area were so welcoming and polite, I have not experienced this level of service in 5 star hotels so 10/10 for them.
There was one particular English speaking women who may of been the duty manager who was exceptional in both customer service and attention to detail. she is an asset to this property and her English skills were exceptional.
This is my second time staying here, and it's probably my favorite accommodation in all of Japan. The staff is incredible, the atmosphere at the place is fantastic, thanks to the shared dinner offered almost every night. The value you get for breakfast+dinner+a twin bed in a super nice room is kinda ridiculous if I'm honest.
Even the fact that it's 15 minute walk from the station is outweighed in my opinion by the fact that you get to pass by the extremely nice castle park on the way.
I genuinely didn't want to leave 😂
The staff were very nice and relaxed, but very attentive and made an effort to speak in English with their foreign staff. They also were available late at night and have some medication for common aliments if you are feeling sick during your stay. The food in the little restaurant was delicious, and the location of the hotel was really great, being right next to the major ski lifts.
Our room was absolutely amazing, we got the suite with onsen on the veranda. The onsen on the top floor had a fantastic view of the surrounding mountains. The dinners were delicious and the souvenir shop had a nice selection of goods. Interior design of the hotel was very interesting, fun to explore. Overall service was impeccable, very friendly and helpful staff.
Super affordable - location was amazingly convenient and there was breakfast + lots of amenities (shaver, brush, nightwear etc.) Breakfast had a decent spread and it was tasty enough for the price paid. Toilets were clean and of the typical Japan size. Housekeeping made the bed everyday as well. Staff could speak some English so props to them!
Great hotel located right in the Yamagata train station! Friendly staff - we arrived earlier than check-in time so the front desk held our luggage for us and even again after check-out before our train arrived. The rooms were clean, modern, well-lit and more spacious than I expected. Close to lots of restaurants and shops.
Great host, young and helpful. Plus listening to their own path breaking story was so much refreshing. Breakfast was simply awesome! After hearing from me that I like Japanese food a lot but do not cook at home, next morning they served me a delicious and unique Washoku breakfast. So much more value for the money you pay.
Very close to Yamagata station and excellent value for money. In the reception room floor there was a variety of shampoos and shower gels to borrow and other toiletries such as toothbrushes to take. We enjoyed the Japanese style breakfast and the massage chairs were a pleasant surprise.
Good location from Yamagata Station. 8 minutes walk from East Exit. Good value with substantial Western or Japanese breakfast provided. Next to convenient store 7-11 and a very good BBQ beef restaurant. The room has a massage armchair to soothe tired muscles.
Near station, excellent service and staff, nice breakfast, we can left our baggage for several hours after check out, room size typical Japan’s room. My brother left his phone, we call and they agreed to send his phone to our next hotel. Thanks
7 min walk from Yamagata Station that has busses for Zao Onsen Ski Resort. Has public coin laundry at the hotel in certain floors, can hold luggage and baggage for you while you other trips and walking distance to bars and cafes.
Location is just perfect. The hotel itself is kind of dormitory. The rooms are with tatami floors, but carpeted on top. Maybe it's dome during the skiing season. Although beds are foldable, they are really comfy.
Location 5 mins away from Yamagata station.
Free breakfast.
Usual business hotel amenities, there were even large-sized nightgowns available.
Smooth check-in and check-out process with baggage drop-off
Beautiful view and lighting in the room. This hotel is more environmentally aware, and does a child sponsorship program I think. Breakfast was pretty good!
